Description

William Wordsworth. (1770-1850) “The Excursion, Being a Portion of The Recluse, a Poem” Second Edition. Published in 1820 for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown. Paternoster Row. SIGNED by the author. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a Second Edition of this volume signed in ink by Wordsworth. The first edition, as was the second, were dedicated (printed) to William, Earl of Lonsdale. There is no owner’s ex libris label so it’s difficult to know whether the book was donated by Wordsworth to the Earl or to another reader or whether this could have been the author’s own copy. Books signed by Wordsworth are very rare and seldom come up for auction. I bought this copy myself from a reputable London auction (I collect signed books) and I can provide the original sale documentation to the buyer. Condition : The book is in very good/excellent condition. The spine (and label) and boards are possibly original and are in excellent condition with only minor wear and bumping to the edges and corners. The binding is strong and the spine, boards and all pages are tight and holding firm. The book has been rebound at some point as the lining on the inside of the boards and the flysheets are not original. The first few and the last few pages have browned slightly and have some foxing and faint water marks. All the pages from the title page onwards are clean or have minor foxing and all the text is clear and strong. The signature has not faded at all. Please see the photographs as these are a true representation of the book’s condition. PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT MY OTHER LISTINGS. I will be offering other SIGNED books by, Arthur Ransome, Harriet Martineau and other ‘English Lakes’ writers and I am also offering Alfred Wainwright guides and sketchbooks (some SIGNED) which are all First Edition, First Impressions with original dust jackets. I am selling part of my collection of books to make space on my shelves! All my sales will be genuine sales as described on the listings but please feel free to ask any questions before buying. FREE UK POSTAGE or collection by arrangement. International buyers will pay postage and please be aware that local customs charges may apply and these will also be payable by the buyer.
