The Sand Pebbles by Richard McKenna REAL 1st Edition 1962 Description REAL First edition with indicative date code (reprints also state first edition). Near Fine condition in an attractive, near fine dustwrapper protected by plastic wrap. Has unobtrusive small tear on the front panel (see photo) and a couple of library prints.. Author's first book and only novel, succeeded by a posthumously published collection of science-fiction short stories. McKenna enlisted in the Navy and served for ten years in the Far East, two of them on a Yangtze River gunboat, an experience which served as the basis for this novel. After his retirement from the Navy he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study writing. *The Sand Pebbles* was the 1963 Harper Prize novel chosen by Louis Auchincloss, Philip Roth, and Elizabeth Janeway. McKenna died soon afterwards in 1964. It was the basis for the excellent Robert Wise film featuring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, and Candice Bergen in her second film. Book exactly as described 1st/1st in 'Fine' condition as is the dj. Priced well below market but seller was willing to stand by original offer. Excellent seller communication. Reasonable shipping cost. Adequate packaging but could have used protective cardboard wrap to ensure the dj integrity. Fast despatch and timely delivery.
