An original seven page, C. C. Massey autograph letter signed, dated 1885. Two pieces of paper, each folded once to create eight pages with manuscript text on seven sides. Written on paper with an embossed letterhead that reads "Athenaeum Club. Pall Mall S. W." and signed at the end by C.C. Massey. Some minor wear, minor discoloration, else in very good + condition. Charles Carleton Massey (1838–1905) was a British barrister, mystic, and pioneering figure in the early study of psychical phenomena. A man of deep intellectual and spiritual interests, he was closely involved with both the Theosophical Society—serving as the first president of its London branch—and the Society for Psychical Research, where he played a foundational role before resigning over internal disputes. Massey was deeply influenced by Christian mysticism and the writings of Jacob Böhme and Emanuel Swedenborg, and he actively defended controversial mediums such as Henry Slade and William Eglinton against charges of fraud. His 1880 English translation of Johann Zöllner’s Transcendental Physics introduced continental psychical theories to an English-speaking audience. Posthumously, his writings were collected in Thoughts of a Modern Mystic (1909), cementing his reputation as a serious thinker at the intersection of law, spirituality, and psychical research during the Victorian era.
