There are accompanying biographical and historical notices for each sitter, authored by Edmund Lodge, with editorial oversight by John Chamberlaine. The portraits depict members of Henry VIII’s court—including the King himself, his queens (such as Anne Boleyn), courtiers like Thomas More, Thomas Wyatt, and various nobles and functionaries. These are reproductions of Holbein’s preparatory drawings, known for their remarkable precision and observational realism. The accompanying texts provide historical context—offering lives, roles, and significance of each individual. In the publisher's original half-leather morocco-backed marbled boards, with six compartments to the spine, with titles, lines and decorations in gilt. All the edges of the pages is gilt. There is shelfwear and marks to the covers. There is a blank "tissue guard" leaf ahead of each plate of which one tissue guard has tears. The gutter is exposed in a few places however this does not impact at all on the integrity of the binding. There is some foxing to the first and last three leaves and then very light occasional foxing to perhaps three or four leaves only. There are no previous owners' names or inscriptions. The plates are bright, fresh and crisp. There are no missing, stained, creased or loose pages. The spine and binding are solid. It is complete and original.
