Description
An authentic and historically significant late 16th-century English Geneva Bible volume, centered on a 1582 New Testament printed in London by Christopher Barker, the royal printer to Queen Elizabeth I. This volume has been later rebound and includes additional 16th-century material, most notably a 1583 metrical Psalms section printed by John Day. This is a composite historical volume, assembled from genuine period components, likely in the 17th–19th century after the loss of the original Old Testament and Apocrypha. This Bible is almost certainly a NT variant of Herbert 173. Contents New Testament Title page dated 1582 Printed in London by Christopher Barker Extensive marginal notes and cross-references The Whole Book of Psalms (metrical) Dated 1583 Printed by John Day Sternhold & Hopkins version for congregational singing Additional Material Concordance Decorative woodcut illustrations Map of the Holy Land Ornamental initials and engraved title pages Historical Background: The Geneva Bible, first published in 1560, was the most widely used English Bible of the Protestant Reformation prior to the King James Version. It was the first English Bible to include verse numbers, extensive marginal commentary, and study aids, making it especially popular among scholars and lay readers alike. This translation is deeply rooted in the work of William Tyndale, whose earlier English translations formed the foundation of most later Protestant Bibles. The Geneva Bible was produced by English Protestant exiles in Geneva during the reign of Mary I and later became the dominant Bible in Elizabethan England. The 1582 New Testament in this volume was printed by Christopher Barker, official royal printer to Queen Elizabeth I, reflecting authorized English Protestant publishing of the period. The included Psalms section, printed by John Day, represents the widely used Sternhold & Hopkins metrical Psalter, which was intended for singing in churches and homes. These psalters were often sold separately and later bound together with Bibles. Composite volumes such as this, combining parts from different printers and years, are not uncommon. They reflect centuries of use, repair, and preservation, where damaged or incomplete books were reassembled to retain their usefulness and value. This volume stands as a surviving artefact of early English Protestant religious life, bridging the period between the Reformation and the rise of the King James Bible Binding & Condition Binding: Later leather binding (likely 18th–19th century), not original Condition: Minimal (Although there is some) trimming along the edges.
