This is a remarkable survivor from the World War I era: a Henry Birks & Sons "St. James" Model trench watch. This timepiece represents the highest level of Canadian luxury retail from the early 20th century, sold by Montreal’s premier jeweler. Birks was often called the “Tiffany’s of Canada.” This watch which is engraved on the movement as the St. James model is named after his first boutique which opened on Saint James Street in Montreal in 1879. Key Features: • Movement: High-grade Swiss manual-wind movement, factory-stamped "St. James" (the premier line for Birks). Features 15 jewels and is currently in running condition. • Matching Serial Numbers: Highly desirable "Triple-Signed" piece. The serial number 2688103 is clearly stamped on the movement, the inner case back, and the outer case door. This confirms 100% original factory parts. • Case Material: Solid 0.935 Sterling Silver (Lange Silver). This is a higher purity than standard .925 sterling and features the Swiss "Three Bears" hallmark era-appropriate for 1914–1918. • Dial: Original Porcelain/Enamel Dial in exceptional condition. Features the iconic "Red 12" and the full "Henry Birks & Sons Limited" retailer signature. Enamel dials are prized as they do not fade or tarnish like metal dials. • Era: Circa 1914–1920. Known as a "Trench Watch" or "Campaign Watch," transitioning from pocket watch to wrist-wear with fixed wire lugs. As to Condition, the watch winds, sets, and runs. However, the service history is unknown, and watches of these age may require service in the future. The .935 silver case shows a beautiful natural patina, some scratches from wear and has been personalized on the back. The porcelain dial is free of the common "spiderweb" cracks often seen in this model. The crystal is clear and well-fitted. Please see the photographs since they are part of my description.
