Description

The Sadist is an iconic title of the sleaze paperback era and stands apart for its “all out” effort by both author and artist to create a newsstand shocker. Despite its reputation, copies in great condition are scarce. The good girl bondage cover is notable as famed pulp artist Robert Bonfils’s first cover art for Greenleaf. However, perhaps no artist could match the violent, sex-soaked story spun by author Lawrence Block. The book’s author byline is Andrew Shaw, a pseudonym for Lawrence Block, the best selling author of more than 100 crime and mystery novels. The 188-page pulp fiction novel centers on a psychopathic hit man hired to murder a family. During his journey, he finds cheap booze, prostitutes, ne'er-do-wells, and lots of sex. Block’s story is so lurid, author S. Craig Zahler’s 2019 review published on his website, calls The Sadist “the most depraved and amoral books I've read … While some sleaze paperbacks from this era did little more than provide colorful breast metaphors and vaguely described ‘aberrant’ sexual behavior, this book genuinely feels like it might have been illegal to own. An ugly and crisp piece of hate, The Sadist delivers far, far, far more nastiness than the lurid cover suggests.” BACK COVER TEXT: LUST KILLER … Twisted, sick, foul, monstrous - Jack Garth, the wanton killer, loose in an Eastern city that had its own sins to hide. A quiet town where a bored wife could welcome a sadist's arms to make a deal for the death of her husband. Where a teenage Beatnik hooker could lead the way to the most degrading lust orgy ever held. A sinful town whose passions turned to terror when the prowling demon that was Jack Garth shambled into the night-shrouded streets and left a lust trail of shredded flesh … … SIN DEVIL! The cover retains bright colors for an excellent presentation. Although a bit rolled, this copy has a tight spine. All pages are intact, but could come loose if the book is opened too wide. Foxing is limited to the fore edges, but there is naturally some tanning to the pages. The back cover shows some insect damage to its edges.
