This set of 3 coupons, 1 coupon of each issued denomination from the “bicentennial” usda food coupon era is a nostalgic reminder of where it all began for some, and a reminder of how far some of us have come over the years. Memories from simpler times come to mind for some, running to the corner store when the monthly booklet was issued for candy or groceries. These now rare and collectible paper food coupons were intended as a single use currency to help low income families, often living in rural communities throughout the United States obtain the food they needed for the month. Once spent the grocery stores would redeem coupons and the coupons were then sent back to be recorded and destroyed. Because of this single use system and grocery stores relying on the money from redeeming the coupons, few survived over the years. The last year to redeem paper food coupons was in 2009. Snap benefits replaced the original system, retiring the booklets and paper coupons. Until this switch it was illegal to buy and sell coupons or possess coupons not issued by the USDA.
