Every town in America has a street that is special or unique to that town, but one street Fifth Avenue in New York is known around the world. In “Commemoration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Founding of Fifth Avenue” the Fifth Avenue Association produced this book, “Fifth Avenue Old and New 1824 to 1924”. Written by Henry Collins Brown this “Centennial History represents a serious effort to achieve civic and historic value, to make our book worthy of the Centennial Celebration. Seventeen years ago the rapid northward growth of the city threatened the permanent injury of Fifth Avenue and the great shopping and residential district, of which it is the main artery.” In this Centennial Book the first 97 pages take the reader through the history of “Old Fifth Avenue” with text, black and white illustrations, and photographs. Starting on page 98 through 124 the “Fifth Avenue To-day” is presented starting with a Century of Realty Values. The final section of the book is “dedicated to the men and the institutions whose efforts have helped to make possible THE FIFTH AVENUE OF TODAY”, which is basically approximately 64 pages of advertisements, although they are an equally important part of the history. Now, one hundred years later the association would be pleased to know that Fifth Avenue (specifically Upper Fifth Ave, 49 th – 60 th streets) remains a vibrant neighborhood, known for its iconic attractions and cultural landmarks. It is considered one of the world’s most expensive retail locations with luxury shopping destinations, flagship stores, and high-end boutiques. Henry Collins Brown (1862 – 1961) is today defined as a New York historian, lecturer, author, and founder of the Museum of the City of New York. But as arriving in New York from Scotland he left school at 15 but he became passionate about the history of his adopted city. He worked as an advertising salesman, became a journalist for “The Sun” writing about the city’s history as well as its buildings. In 1923 he founded the Museum of the City of New York but three years later was pushed out as the and it was not until the museum’s 75 th anniversary in 1998, Brown received acknowledgement. Barred from society he retreated to his home in Hastings-on Hudson, fought anxiety and depression, suffered a nervous breakdown and was institutionalize. When he emerged, he wrote the acclaimed memoir of mental illness “A Mind Mislaid” published in 1937. This book remains as testament to his knowledge and love of Fifth Avenue and New York City.
