Historic Hardeeville, South Carolina on the Savannah River was occupied by Sherman's Army January 28, 1865 and burned the next day as SheRman's Army resumed their March to Columbia, SC. An original Civil War Pay Voucher issued at Hardeeville, S.C. Jan 28, 1865 for money to be paid to the wife of 20th Connecticut Private Edmund C Purple a native of East Haddam, Connecticut. The Voucher is signed by Private Purple, and by Lt Cecil Burleigh as the private's company officer, and signed on the reverse by the recipient Mrs Elizabeth Purple, and with impressed cancellation seal by a New Haven bank, dated 1865. The Voucher is stamped as Paid. 1p 8 x 3" ptd/Ink. Minor age stains, edge wear, Overall VG. Comes w service info for the private and his lieutenant who served together 3 years.
