Colonel Richard Irving Dodge, of an eminent family including General Richard Dodge & Washington Irving, served 44 years in the Army. During the Civil War he commanded the 12th US Infantry, postwar he commanded Fort Dodge, Kansas, scene of his famous standoff with a Fort Dodge city Vigilante Committee described in the book "Dodge City". He was notably sympathetic to the plight of the Indians, his journals included the first published descriptions of Devils Tower and the Black Hills and The Powder River Expedition. Colonel Dodge also was author of many accounts of his life on the Frontier and among the Indians. An original Civil War Union Army Transportation Certificate for 4 Provost Guards to travel from Elmira to Dunkirk, New York on the Erie Railroad, issued March 31, 1864, signed by various officers and by Erie RR Agents at Dunkirk and Elmira, and also approved on front by Colonel Dodge, having served as Chief Mustering Officer for the State of New York,Sept 27, 1866. The 1p 8 x 14" ptd/ink Certificate is the only one I have ever encountered. The document bears a strong signature by Colonel Dodge.
