Description
Private Joseph Morris , 23rd Kentucky Volunteers served 1864-1865, was captured at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee and became a Prisoner of War at Andersonville Prison, Georgia. An Original May, 1865 account by Private Morris of his time in the service including capture and POW life at Andersonville. Briefly describing his family roots,he notes his brother is currently in the naval service aboard the Gunboat Caroldelet, then details his service in Company G, 23rd Kentucky Infantry, listing his skirmishes and battles incl Pulaski, Columbia, Franklin & Nashville, Tennessee. Serving as advanced picket and escaping capture at Franklin, he was again at Nashville, on advanced picket when he was captured , forced to stand in the front line of the Rebels until taken to the rear by a Rebel officer, was stripped of his clothing and given rags to wear. After 4 days without rations he became ill. At Corinth Hospital the Rebel Doctors and attendants gave him humane care. On recovery he was sent to Tupelo,then Okolona, Meridian, Selma where he suffered the "bloody flux", then went to Columbia, and finally Andersonville Prison where he became sick w chronic diarrhea, and confirms the mistreatment of other released comrades, being emaciated, broken in health, and cruelly tortured. After being taken from Andersonville by the Rebels and still being sick, he was sent through the parole lines at Vicksburg on April 1, 1865,then convalesced at Jefferson Barracks,Missouri and finally Camp Chase, Ohio where he was given a 30 day furlough. He states that he is at the present writing at his Mother's home, May 17, 1865 while still on furlough and is grateful to God that, despite his extremely painful experiences was able to return to visit Mother, Hannah Roberts, here at Centreville, Allegheney County, New York where he is dictating this account. The account is inscribed on the reverse" "Sketch of Joseph Morris of Centreville, Alleg. County, member of Co G, 21st Reg Ky Vol. Infantry". He dictated the account to a NY Militia Officer at his Mother's home, May, 1865. 3pp ink, 8x13" lined paper, with age stains, wear, old paper tape on back edge, Overall VG. Comes w bio and service info. Pvt Morris, a native of Wales and still a British subject, enlisted as a substitute at Bowling Green, KY, Sept 1864.
