Description

$500 Confederate States Coupon Bond – Criswell 69, Ball 108 Offered for your consideration is a $500 bond issued by the Confederate States of America under the Act of August 19, 1861. It was cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as Cr. 69 and by the late Dr. Douglas Ball as B. 108. The central vignette features a portrait of Robert Toombs, a pre-war United States Congressman and Confederate Secretary of State, presented in an oval frame with a floral design surrounding. Below the vignette is a lengthy financial obligation, executed in a lovely italic script. According to this obligation, “ On the first day of July 1877, The Confederate States of America, will pay to the Bearer of this Bond … the sum of FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS, with interest thereon from this date … at the rate of Eight per Cent, per annum … ” . It further states that “… This debt is authorized by an act of Congress … entitled, ‘An Act to Authorize the issue of Treasury Notes, and to provide a War tax for their redemption …”. It was signed and sealed at “… Richmond, this 6 day of Jany 186 3 …” by “Ro. Tyler” in his capacity as the “Register of the Treasury” . A highly ornate, decorative border encloses the foregoing elements, neatly separating them from the 26 remaining interest coupons. Each coupon is valued at “TWENTY DOLLARS” and is hand-signed by Mrs. “M. F. Cary” , a female employee in the Confederate Treasury. In common with most government bonds of this era, the reverse of this piece is blank. Confederate financial records indicate that 1833 bonds were originally issued; though how many have been destroyed through the intervening 150+ years is unknown. The presently offered specimen would be a great addition to any Confederate currency or general Civil War collection, or as a framed display in an office or den. Robert Augustus Toombs was born in Washington, Georgia on July 2, 1810. He studied law at the University of Virginia in 1829 and was admitted to the Georgia bar the following year. He became a successful planter and lawyer, and commanded a company of Georgia volunteers in the Creek War. Toombs served in the Georgia legislature from 1837 through 1840, and again from 1842 to 1844. He was subsequently elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1845 through 1853. Elected to the United States Senate in 1852 and re-elected in 1858, Toombs resigned on February 1, 1861. After losing the Confederate presidential election to Jefferson Davis, Toombs accepted the position of secretary of state in the provisional government. He resigned in July, 1861 and was given command of a brigade in the Georgia state militia. He performed adequately, but resigned when refused promotion. After losing an election to the Confederate Senate in 1863, Toombs became inspector general of the Georgia militia. At the close of the war, Toombs fled to Cuba and later to London. He returned in 1867 and resumed the practice of law. Robert Toombs died on December 15, 1885. Robert Tyler was the son of John Tyler, the 10 th President of the United States, and served as the register of the Confederate Treasury from August 13, 1861 until the close of the war. He received his position mainly through the influence of his father and not due to any special abilities of his own. It is interesting to note that during his father’s administration, Robert spent a great deal of time in the White House, and his wife served for some time as the official hostess. The presently offered bond exhibits signs of significant period use and subsequent storage, though it features relatively nice eye-appeal for the issue. Light toning is present across the entire surface, slightly darker at the edges and along the storage folds. In addition to this darker toning, minor soiling can also be seen at the edges, especially at the upper right. Numerous light stains and foxing spots can be seen on examination, significantly more pronounced on the unaccomplished back. Several scattered pinholes can be seen when the document is held to the light. In common with virtually all documents of this type, several harsh folds are present (many of these folds occurred when the bonds were placed in safes or the cubbyholes of desks). The contrast is relatively sharp for this issue, with a bold portrait of Toombs dominating the center. This historic piece measures approximately 14 x 16¼ inches. A great opportunity to add one of these popular bonds to your collection. A wonderful candidate for framing. A $5.95 charge will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance. A $5.00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location. If you have any questions regarding this item, please ask before bidding.
