Express Shipping Worldwide is Free Bacchanalia By Norman Lindsay 1928 in an Edition of 550 With a Certificate of Authenticity Printed on Barcham's Green handmade paper with the original scalloped right hand edge. Blank on the reverse. This beautiful collotype was created from a pen drawing by Norman Lindsay created between 1908 and 1922. This collotype was published in Satyrs and Sunlight in 1928 by The Fanfrolico Press. The edition was limited to 550 copies only. The creation of this print was performed under the supervision of William Maxwell and printed by A. Alexander & Sons. The collotype process used by Norman Lindsay is quite complex and lends itself often to failure unless the process is truly mastered, as in this example. The plate is made by coating a plate of glass or metal with a substrate composed of gelatin or other colloid and hardening it. Then it is coated with a thick coat of dichromated gelatin and dried carefully at a controlled temperature (a little over 50° Celsius ) so it "reticulates" or breaks up into a finely grained pattern when washed later in approximately 16 °C water. The plate is then exposed in contact with the negative using an ultraviolet source which changes the ability of the exposed gelatin to absorb water later. The plate is developed by carefully washing out the dichromate salt and dried without heat. The plate is left in a cool dry place to cure for 24 hours before using it to print. (Wiki) Quite a process indeed but the final result is pretty spectacular. The print measures 22.5cm x 29cm, and the image measures 14.5cm x 20cm.
