Early civil aviation period 1921 is just after World War I, when aviation technology became publicly accessible. Aerial photography was still novel and technically difficult — making publications like this unusual and prestigious. 2. Australia’s first aerial city imagery It represents some of the earliest systematic aerial views of Melbourne and Geelong. Prior to this, most urban imagery was ground-based or from elevated viewpoints (towers, hills). This makes the book an important visual record of urban form before modern development. Photographic plates The book consists of a sequence of aerial photographs taken from an aircraft. Each plate is mounted within a decorative printed frame, and captioned with the location. In oblong format with pictorial covers in 32 pages with some 27 full page views. There is shelfwear, creasing, a trace of foxing to the front cover. There are old moisture marks affecting the covers, the first three leaves, and the last leaf, but does not affect the text or the plates. There is the odd tear that does not affect the text or plates. The stapled binding is solid. There are no missing or loose pages. Complete and original. Measures 37.5cm x 25cm.
