He was born in South Africa in 1870, studied law in England and became known for his intelligence and leadership. But his life soon turned to war. In the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), Smuts fought against the British, using fast-moving tactics to outsmart his enemies. Later, he helped make peace between the two sides. After the war, Smuts worked to unite South Africa and became Prime Minister in 1919. He helped form the Union of South Africa, bringing different groups together. Smuts played a big role in World War I. He fought for the British Empire and helped capture German territories in Africa. After the war, he helped create the League of Nations, an early version of the United Nations. When World War II began, Smuts led South Africa and supported the Allies. He was close to Winston Churchill, and advised him on military operations. After the war, Smuts helped create the United Nations. He believed in global cooperation and peace.
