This volume is an album-like picture-book presenting the drawings (and a little writing) of Olga Meredith Robinson, who was seven years old when it appeared. A contemporary review in The Sun (Sydney) calls her a “seven-year authoress” whose “youthful drawings” were printed, noting their “interesting childish fancy.” The book had an editorial champion in Captain-Chaplain James Wilson, identified in that same review as the “editor of her book,” who promoted her as a kind of child prodigy (“wonder-child”). The review also recounts biographical colour used to frame the book—e.g., she had been sketching since age two and, while in London, was even asked to appear in Peter Pan as a “lightning sketch artist.” (A magistrate, the piece adds drily, sent her “home to bed.”) The leaves are chiefly illustrations—simple, imaginative child’s drawings (the “dreams and fancies” of the title), with a portrait of Olga included. In pictorial oblong cardcovers with the dustjacket, in 58 pages. The Dustjacket: It appears to have meant to be attached to the cardcover boards and has come away at the external spine. The front hinge has been reinforced with clear archival tape with the cardcover board. There are chips and creases to the front panel (much less to the rear panel), and the front panel dustjacket blank flap is not present. The Book: There is light shelfwear. The blank reverse of the frontispiece is foxed and otherwise there is just the occasional spot. There are no missing, creased, stained, damaged or loose pages. There is no colouring in, crayon marks or the like. The binding and block are solid. Complete and original. A very rare edition. Measures 28cm x 22cm.
