The Christiana Riot and the Treason Trials of 1851: An Historical Sketch by W. U. Hensel is a detailed account of one of the most dramatic confrontations over slavery to occur in pre–Civil War Pennsylvania. Published in 1911, the book revisits the violent clash in Christiana, Lancaster County, on September 11, 1851, when a Maryland slaveholder seeking to reclaim escaped fugitives under the Fugitive Slave Act was killed in an armed standoff led by William Parker and a community of Black residents and allies. The aftermath saw more than thirty men indicted for treason against the United States, making the so-called “Christiana Treason Trials” a national flashpoint that tested the limits of federal authority and northern resistance to slavery. Hensel’s study, both narrative and documentary, preserves the voices of those involved and frames the episode as a pivotal moment in the rising sectional conflict, blending legal history, local memory, and broader themes of civil rights and Black resistance.
