The Wassail-Bowl by Albert Smith In Two Volumes London: Richard Bentley 1843 First Edition Two octavos, 252p.; 249, [2] pages, publisher's original blind-stamped red cloth covered boards with ornate gilt decoration to spines. Illustrated in black and white. Some slight rubbing and wear, foxing and discoloration, boards slightly splayed on volume two, corners slightly bumped, else in very good condition. Albert Smith’s The Wassail-Bowl (London: Richard Bentley, 1843) is an appealing two-volume Victorian gift-book issued in richly gilt-decorated red cloth, the most attractive and sought-after of the publisher’s original bindings. Blending humorous sketches, holiday tales, and satirical observations of mid-19th-century London life, Smith’s early work exemplifies the festive literary annuals that flourished in the 1840s. Illustrated with wood-engraved cuts typical of Bentley’s collaborations with artists connected to Punch, the set offers a lively mixture of comic storytelling and winter conviviality.
