The translation was undertaken by approximately 50 scholars divided into six companies , working at Oxford, Cambridge, and Westminster. Their work drew on earlier English translations such as the Bishops' Bible , the Geneva Bible , and the pioneering work of William Tyndale . Once completed, the Bible was printed by the King’s Printer, Robert Barker , beginning in 1611. Early printings appeared in several formats, including large folios intended for churches and smaller quarto and octavo editions for personal use . The 1614 printing represented part of the rapid spread of the new translation throughout England. These early quarto editions were among the first affordable versions accessible to private households and contributed greatly to the establishment of the King James Version as the dominant English Bible. Over the centuries, the King James Bible became the most influential English translation of scripture, shaping the language, literature, and religious life of the English-speaking world.
