Description

A Glimpse into the Lost Cause: Examining a $100 Confederate Bond The American Civil War, a conflict that tore the nation apart, left behind a legacy of loss, division, and economic ruin. Among the tangible remnants of this turbulent era are Confederate bonds, tangible representations of the Confederacy's failed attempt at independence. A specific example, a $100 Confederate bond authorized by the Act of Congress C.S.A. of February 20, 1863, offers a poignant glimpse into the Confederacy's financial struggles and the enduring allure of historical artifacts. This particular bond, issued as bond number 326 on March 2, 1869, in Richmond, Virginia, was meant to be a promissory note, promising repayment with interest to its holder. The Confederacy, desperate for funds to finance its war effort, issued numerous bonds in various denominations, appealing to the patriotism of its citizens and promising a future return on investment. This specific example bears witness to the Confederacy's struggle to maintain its financial footing. Authorized by the Act of February 20, 1863, the bond reveals the ongoing need for funds even well into the war. The fact that it was issued in Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, further underscores its significance within the Confederate financial system. The presence of seven attached coupons, each worth $3.50, indicates the bond's terms: the holder was entitled to regular interest payments, theoretically adding to the bond's value. Of course, with the Confederacy's collapse in 1865, these promises were rendered worthless. The coupons serve as a stark reminder of the financial gamble taken by those who invested in the Confederate cause. The fact that this particular bond is listed as bond 120 in the "Criswell Book" (likely referring to a catalog or book dedicated to Confederate currency and financial instruments) adds to its historical significance and verifiability. This referencing helps collectors and historians trace the bond's lineage and understand its rarity and value within the numismatic community. Today, Confederate bonds like this one are not legal tender, but they hold significant historical and collectible value. They represent more than just worthless paper; they are artifacts that connect us to a pivotal moment in American history. They allow us to examine the economic underpinnings of the Confederacy, the hopes and aspirations of its citizens, and the ultimate failure of its cause. This $100 Confederate bond, with its attached coupons and documented presence in the Criswell Book, is a powerful reminder of the Civil War and its lasting impact on the nation. It serves as a tangible link to a complex and controversial period in American history, offering valuable insights into the economic struggles, political motivations, and ultimately, the demise of the Confederate States of America. While the bond may no longer hold monetary value, its historical worth is immeasurable. 1. I got what I paid for. I ordered 2 sets. Out of the 20 nickles that I ordered 18 were dated 1930 or newer. 16 were dated 1935-1937 and only 2 with different mint marks. The condition was as described, some are very nice. I am only a little disappointed with the variety that arrived. My recommendation would be order only 1 set.
